Italy has extended the suspension of the Schengen Agreement, specifically maintaining air and sea border controls on travelers arriving from Spain, informed sources said Monday. <\/p>\n
The measure, extended today for another fifteen days, was introduced on August 1st after the Ceuta migration crisis, ANSA<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n Spain<\/a> retaliated with random checks on travelers coming from Italy.<\/p>\n The Italian Interior Ministry said Italy had extended the Schengen suspension because critical issues remained in Ceuta.<\/p>\n But, it added, Spanish and EU initiatives on normalization are being taken into account, and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi had consulted with his Spanish counterpart.<\/p>\n The decision to extend the suspension of Schengen with Spain “was taken in line with the analysis conducted by the Committee for the Analysis of Immigration and Border Security, given the persistence of the evaluation elements that were the basis for their reintroduction last August 1st, but also taking into account the initiatives already undertaken by Spain, together with the European Union, to ensure that the situation in that area can move towards normalization soon,” the Interior Ministry announced.<\/p>\n The assessments underlying the extension “were communicated by Piantedosi to his Spanish counterpart Fernando Grande-Marlaska during a constructive telephone conversation.”<\/p>\n
