S\u00e1nchez flew to Ceuta and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sanchezcastejon\/status\/2083163473144434884?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">branded<\/a> the crossings an \u201cattack\u201d and a violation of Spain\u2019s territorial integrity. Most migrants subsequently returned to Morocco, but thousands remained.<\/p>\n<p>Madrid is now working to clear the remaining backlog. Around 5,000 migrants remained in Ceuta on Aug. 13, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.estrelladigital.es\/articulo\/seguridad-defensa\/marlaska-cifra-5000-migrantes-que-permanecen-ceuta-mientras-persisten-diferencias-recuentos\/20260813161749449854.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the interior ministry said<\/a>. The opposition People\u2019s Party is demanding more immigration officers be sent to Ceuta to process returns around the clock, while the health ministry and regional governments are dispatching 25,000 vaccine doses to guard against outbreaks of infectious disease.<\/p>\n<p>The incident reignited a debate on unauthorized migration at the European level, with 22 EU leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/ceuta-crisis-22-eu-leaders-letter-spain-pedro-sanchez-migration-policy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signing a letter<\/a> calling for stronger EU external borders.
