Having first sat behind the wheel less than a year ago, he has been selected to represent Team USA at the 2026 T4 Nations Cup in Valencia, Spain, which takes place Sept. 30 through Oct. 4.

What began as a new passion has quickly grown into an incredible opportunity. Through hard work, practice, and race weekends, he has earned the chance to compete against young drivers from around the world. For Ilan, this is more than just another race. It is a chance to represent Team USA and Puerto Rico, gain international racing experience, and keep moving toward his biggest dream of one day becoming a Formula 1 driver.

Ilan said he couldn’t be more excited to compete on a global scale, and is looking forward to showcasing his talents among the best young drivers in the world.

While a small portion of the trip is being paid for thanks to his qualification via races across Florida, Ilan and his father, Fransisco Gomez, are raising funds to help with travel, coaching, and racing costs.

“He’s beyond excited,” Gomez said. “This will actually be his first race outside of Florida. It’s a big jump, but he’s super excited. There will be around 35 countries represented. He’s never raced against as many kids as he will in Spain, going up against 20-plus other drivers.”

Gomez said his son became enthralled with racing on his own. It started with the popular “Cars” character Lightning McQueen from the Disney series, and then when he first laid eyes on a Ferrari at a local car dealership, his interest grew even more.

From there, he started watching YouTube videos about cars and was introduced to the world of F1 racing.

“Then, he asked me to take him karting,” Gomez said. “I had to call a few places because I didn’t know how to get him started or anything like that. We got denied a few times because they didn’t take kids as young as he is. But, we found somebody that was able to help us out, and now, he’s turned out to be really good.”

Ilan’s home track is the T4 KartPlex in Palmetto. The father-and-son duo make the hours-long drive there Thursdays after school, and all day during the weekend starting at 5 a.m.

Gomez said it’s amazing to see his son’s drive and determination, and the sacrifices both of them make to turn a passion into competition success has been immensely rewarding.

Ilan’s day-to-day regimen is that of an athlete — he runs, eats well, and practices his craft in any way he can.

“The bond that we have created has been unmatched,” Gomez said. “It’s been amazing to see his passion. It’s super rewarding. When you see your child at such a young age, you see that he knows what he wants to do. You can see it in his eyes, he’s just not saying it with his words. It’s super special.”

Ilan first began karting last October, going to the track one day out of the week, and he would just kind of drive around, do his laps, with little to no coaching, and not in competition with any other children.

In February of 2026, Ilan signed up for his first race.

“And I think that’s when something sparked in him,” Gomez said. “He didn’t win. He finished last. But he didn’t realize how fast he could go until he saw the other racers. He was like, ‘Oh, I can go faster?’ That day he improved his lap time and saw things differently.”

On April 19, Ilan won his first race, and he hasn’t stopped being on the podium since.

Gomez has set up a GoFundMe for Ilan to assist in the cost of traveling to Spain, and most importantly, he said, is coaching.

“It will help us with everything. It kind of happened last minute — it wasn’t something we were anticipating,” Gomez said. “The equipment and coaching are the biggest things.”

Widely regarded as the premier four-stroke karting event on the global calendar, T4 Nations Cup attracts the very best drivers from around the world to compete on an international stage.

In 2025, the T4 Nations Cup welcomed 248 drivers from 37 regions. Ilan will be competing in the “Bambino” division (5 to 7), and will be one of the youngest drivers there.

Gomez said when Ilan got his Team USA uniform, he put it on, and his eyes lit up in excitement.

“He’s thrilled to represent the U.S. Team, but also, I’m from Puerto Rico, our family is from Puerto Rico, so, we’re happy to represent Puerto Rico as well,” Gomez said. “He pretty much sleeps in his Team USA uniform.”

Ilan has big dreams to one day be a Formula 1 driver, like the ones he watches intently online.

“He wants to be on the track all day, every day,” Gomez said. “It’s hard to pull him off the track. .He always wants to do another session. He’s always asking about when we’re going to the track. It’s all him, too. He’s wanting me to come out here with him. His determination is unmatched.

“He heard his coach saying he needed to be able to visualize the track, to close your eyes and do certain things. And one day, I was at home wondering where Ilan was, and he’s in the garage, sitting on his go-kart, visualizing the track and going through movement all on his own.”

For those that would like to donate to Ilan’s journey of competing in Spain, visit gofundme.com/f/ilan-gomez-to-team-usa-and-puerto-rico.

/Cape News 6-year-old racer to represent Team U.S.A, and Puerto…

[2
17
post-80426","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-spain","tag-spain
["GET
