The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) has launched a tender for the construction of a new electrical substation to supply power to the Port of Valencia and companies operating at the port. The facility will have an installed capacity of 110 MW, provided by two 55 MW transformers.<\/p>\n
The second high-voltage substation will double the port\u2019s power supply capacity. It is intended to meet growing demand from cargo terminals, logistics infrastructure and new onshore power supply (OPS) systems for ships.<\/p>\n
The project has a budget of \u20ac15.6m and is co-funded by the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The new substation will connect the Port Authority of Valencia\u2019s electricity network in the northern area of the port to the high-voltage distribution grid.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy operating two independent substations, each connected through separate service connections provided by the distribution utility, the port facility ensures a highly resilient power supply architecture with maximum availability. As a result, in the event of network failures, maintenance work or exceptional demand peaks affecting the incoming power line, the port\u2019s internal electricity network will be able to switch seamlessly to the second substation, ensuring uninterrupted operations across the terminals. This high level of reliability is essential to prevent critical disruptions to cargo-handling cranes and to maintain the continuous power supply required for reefers,\u201d the port authority said.<\/p>\n
Through its Net Zero Emissions Plan, the Port of Valencia aims to achieve energy self-sufficiency<\/a>. The plan involves total planned and ongoing investment of \u20ac900m\u2014\u20ac605m from the APV and \u20ac295m from private investors. The port is also working to generate all the electricity required to meet demand from economic and commercial activities at its ports.<\/p>\n Container traffic at the Port of Valencia reached 5.66m TEU in 2025<\/a>, up 3.41% from 5.47m TEU in 2024 and a new year-end record. In 2023, the port handled 4.8m TEU. In H1 2026, the APV\u2019s ports of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia handled 2,819,602 TEU<\/a>, up 0.2% year-on-year.
