The Bulletin recently reported that in July, there were 2,088 private jet arrivals and departures at Palma Airport<\/a>. These represented around 6.5% of flights registered by the AENA airports authority – 32,198.<\/p>\n

Palma ranks eleventh among European airports for private jet flights. The list is headed by Paris-Le Bourget Airport, followed by Nice in second place. Palma\u2019s position reflects the fact that business jet traffic intensifies in the summer months as does the arrival of tourists in the luxury sector.<\/p>\n

Private jets<\/a> have been a target for critics of Mallorca<\/a>\u2019s tourism model, environmentalists GOB having been among those calling for a ban<\/a>. And now, Spain<\/a> is aggressively targeting the private jet sector at the European Union<\/a> level, proposing a new EU-wide tax<\/a> on private flights to finance climate change<\/a> adaptation and fight devastating wildfires.<\/p>\n

This regulatory push contrasts directly with a recent EU court decision that ruled private jet manufacturing cannot be automatically excluded from the bloc\u2019s green finance framework. Simultaneously, Spain continues to be one of Europe\u2019s premier destinations for private aviation, particularly across its popular Mediterranean hubs.<\/p>\n

On September 3, 2026, Spain\u2019s Ministry for the Ecological Transition, led by Minister Sara Aagesen, submitted a formal proposal to EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra. The initiative calls for a permanent EU climate emergency response system. The proposed fund would be directly financed by EU-wide taxes levied on private jet flights and the excess profits of oil and gas corporations.<\/p>\n

The tax revenue would build shared resources to help the bloc adapt to extreme weather, including establishing a dedicated European aerial firefighting fleet to counteract worsening seasonal wildfires. Spain\u2019s regulatory offensive follows a major legal victory for the aviation industry at the EU General Court in June 2026.<\/p>\n

The court annulled a prior European Commission decision that automatically barred business and private aviation from the EU\u2019s sustainable finance taxonomy. The court ruled that the Commission\u2019s reasoning\u2014which evaluated emissions purely on a per-passenger-kilometre basis\u2014failed to meet legal standards because other transport options are not always viable, low-carbon alternatives to private travel<\/a>. Consequently, private jet manufacturing can legally qualify as a \u201cgreen investment\u201d under specific sustainable criteria.<\/p>\n

High-volume traffic is heavily concentrated around Madrid, Ibiza<\/a>, M\u00e1laga, and Palma. The Balearic Islands experience significant private flight demand, transitioning from peak summer yachting crowds into active shoulder-season travel by late September.
