Developing talent was once the trademark of the Liga Endesa<\/a> \u2013 a league where high-basketball-IQ players were built slowly, patiently, and systematically, capable of playing for the team before even thinking about their own statistics. For decades, this \u201cescuela de baloncesto\u201d exported players who shaped European and global basketball.<\/p>\n

This summer, that identity received perhaps its heaviest blow yet, and the numbers confirm it better than any mere impression. Last summer, a total of six players arrived from the G League<\/a> to EuroLeague<\/a> representatives from Spain. This summer, there are ten players that spent most of their career in the G League and are now going to play in Spanish teams that compete in the EuroLeague \u2013 a 67 percent increase in just one year. The question is no longer whether the Liga Endesa will absorb G League talent, but whether it will lose what made it special for decades in the process.<\/p>\n

The G League expedition: Quantity that alters DNA<\/p>\n

This summer looks like a Las Vegas Summer League box score, only translated into Spanish:<\/p>\n

It should be noted that Girona <\/a>made the biggest marketing move. Mac McClung<\/a>, a three-time Slam Dunk Champion and two-time G League MVP, arrived at the club owned by Marc Gasol. During his introduction, Sports Director Fernando San Emeterio described him primarily as a scorer capable of creating his own shot from all positions and playing point guard, which is not exactly the profile first associated with \u201csystematic\u201d European basketball.<\/p>\n

By nature, the G League is a competition without tactical constraints: focusing on transition, individual statistics, athleticism, and the pursuit of a two-way contract. When a double-digit number of such players suddenly enters a league like the Liga Endesa, almost twice as many as last year, the philosophy of the entire league change.<\/p>\n

Where are the Spanish gems?<\/p>\n

This is where the true cost of \u201cAmericanization\u201d is most visible. While clubs pack their rosters with athletic projects from America, the space for developing domestic Under-23 players is reduced to a statistical error. The four Spanish EuroLeague teams have just as few young players. Valencia leads the way with two U23 players, Mario Saint-Supery<\/a> and Lucas Mari. Barcelona and Real Madrid have one player each: Juan Nunez<\/a> at the Blaugrana and returnee Eli Ndiaye for Los Blancos, while Baskonia does not have a single U23 domestic player on its roster. The aforementioned Girona, like Real and Barcelona, also has only one U23 domestic player, Isaac Vazquez. And of those four, only Nunez and Saint-Supery have worn the senior national team jersey. As for the minute distribution:<\/p>\n

Someone might say here: well, Spain has always brought in Americans, so what\u2019s the difference? The difference is not in nationality, but in the profile of the players themselves. These used to be proven EuroLeague veterans or players with NBA<\/a> experience who complemented the system. Today, untested G League projects are brought in, with the hope that European coaches will eventually teach them tactics, while the space for their own youth is increasingly being extinguished.<\/p>\n

\"Mo<\/p>\n

To make the absurdity complete: last season, Americans from the G League on these same teams received more minutes than domestic young players. Miles Norris<\/a> averaged 21 minutes for Barcelona, while Juan Nunez averaged about 14 minutes. Baskonia gave its three imports, Mamadi Diakite<\/a>, Marquis Nowell<\/a>, and Eugene Omoruyi<\/a>, an average of 20, 19, and 17 minutes per game, respectively, while Rafa Villar played about 12 minutes. It should also be noted that Villar left his club over the summer.<\/p>\n

The place that was once a natural habitat for a young Spaniard has belonged to someone else for years, only the name of the import changes from season to season. The only young player who got a slightly bigger chance was Sergio De Larrea<\/a>, who played 18 minutes on average for Valencia, but as of this summer, he is no longer a member of the team.<\/p>\n

If Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, and Baskonia only have one or two (or even zero) young domestic players in their entire rotation, where will the next Sergio Llull<\/a>, Sergio Rodriguez<\/a>, Rudy Fernandez<\/a>, or Juan Carlos Navarro<\/a> and many others be forged? When the FEB\u2019s development chain loses playing time as its currency, the league also loses its ability to produce such players at all.<\/p>\n

The McClung case<\/p>\n

Mac McClung\u2019s arrival at Girona perfectly illustrates this new wave. McClung is a global social media star, a player with elite athletic abilities who guarantees packed arenas and clips on TikTok and Instagram, a massive marketing hit for a club like Girona. His arrival at Gasol\u2019s club further amplifies the story, a former NBA champion and Defensive Player of the Year is now building a project around a player whose trademark is completely contrary to the philosophy Gasol played by.<\/p>\n

The question is whether McClung is a player around whom systematic European basketball can be built, or a \u201csoloist\u201d whose style does not tolerate the tactical restrictions of European defense. If teams from the lower and middle tiers of the Liga Endesa start building their game around individuals from the G League instead of tactical continuity, the Liga Endesa loses it\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cLa Familia\u201d will pay the price<\/p>\n

Bringing in G League players is not inherently bad, European basketball has always grown when real, difference-making reinforcements arrived from America. The problem arises when systemic reorientation changes the nature of the league.<\/p>\n

If the Liga Endesa becomes an unofficial development league for the American profile of players seeking a return to the NBA, it loses what once made the Liga Endesa the \u201cescuela de baloncesto\u201d, the tactical rigor that made it unreachable for the rest of Europe. The highest price of this trend will not be paid by Barcelona, Real, Valencia, or Baskonia in the current season. It will be paid by the Spanish national team, \u201cLa Familia\u201d.
