It was a banner year for the Summerville High School varsity tennis program, and on top of all of the new hardware trophies that will forever remain in the halls of Summerville High, the Bears had five players earn all-league honors in the Mother Lode League.
Seniors Carter Webb and Mason Stokes and junior Matthew Wood were selected to the boys first team all-league roster, while senior Summer Hankins and sophomore Brenna Nixon made the girls first team all-league roster.
All of this came at the tail end of a historic season in which the Bears secured the program’s first Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Co-Ed Tennis Championship over their league rival the Bret Harte Bullfrogs, and the program’s first ever boys doubles championship, secured by Webb and Stokes last month.
Webb led the team in total season points, which are accrued through wins over the season, with 45 total points and 7-3 individual record.
Wood followed closely behind with 41 points and added two more wins for the Bears on the year with a 9-3 overall record.
Stokes had an impressive, near-perfect record this year on the courts at 11-1 while adding 35 points.
Hankins and Nixon both earned 37 points on the season each, with Nixon sporting an impressive 8-4 overall record and Hankins finishing 5-7 on the season.
The duo of Stokes and Webb also won the boys doubles MLL championship earlier this season for the third consecutive year in a row.
It’s clear to see that the Bears’ efforts this season were well-recognized by the league, and the addition of five new all-MLL selections can only further interest in a sport that is growing by leaps and bounds in Tuolumne.
