MITCHELL — Mitchell High School girls tennis claimed a pair of duals on Monday at Hitchcock Park, with the Kernels sweeping Brookings 9-0 and taking down Sioux Falls Jefferson 7-2, improving to 5-1 this season in dual competitions.
Facing Brookings, Mitchell swept the doubles matches, losing only two games combined. The No. 1 team of Katie Morgan and Ava Prunty won 6-0, 6-1; Mia Larson and Elliot Smith won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles and Charlee Cimpl and Taryn Bultje won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles for the Kernels.
Smith won her No. 4 singles match 6-0, 6-0, with Cimpl and Bultje winning and dropping only one game in their match at Flight 5 and Flight 6, respectively. Prunty was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at Flight 3, and Mia Larson won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Morgan had the hard-fought victory at No. 1 singles, topping Brookings’ Muxi Tian 6-3, 7-5.

Against Sioux Falls Jefferson, Mitchell won five of the six singles matches. That included Elliot Smith winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles over Jefferson’s Kinley Peterson and Charlee Cimpl (No. 5) and Ava Prunty (No. 3) both winning their matches by dropping only one game in a two-set victory. No. 2 player Mia Larson won in the third-set match tiebreak 6-4, 4-6, 10-2, while Afton Keller, of Jefferson, downed Mitchell’s Flight 1 player Katie Morgan in the tiebreak, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.
The doubles pairings of Larson/Smith and Cimpl and Taryn Bultje cruised in doubles play with sweeps, including Larson and Smith only dropping one set in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. Keller and teammate Kaia Pauli edged Mitchell’s No. 1 pair of Morgan and Prunty, 1-6, 6-3, 10-3.
Mitchell is back in action at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20 when they travel to Harrisburg for a dual match.
