‘Gamechanger’: New CiCo Park tennis courts set for August grand opening

  • August 20, 2026

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – Brand new tennis courts are opening soon at CiCo Park.

City of Manhattan Parks and Rec Director Aaron Stewart said the courts have been in the work for over 10 years.

“This all started with a strategic facility plan that was kind of finalized in 2014,” he said.

The City of Manhattan and USD 383 worked together to make the courts a reality.

“You know, the collaborations is great with the city and everybody that’s doing things to make the atmosphere better for everybody involved,” Manhattan High School Athletic Director Shad Spilski said. “Whether it’s the community or the school.”

The total cost of the project was $2.4 million, with funding coming from the United States Tennis Association and the City of Manhattan’s Quality of Life Sales Tax.

“They assisted in the development and upgrades around these, like the lighting system’s a little bit better, the scoreboards that you can see here were helped funded by them,” Stewart said. “So we actually have scoreboards for every court that’s out here, which is new.”

Spilski says the tennis program is eager to get started on the courts.

“They were read to get out there on Monday, we had to pump the breaks a little bit,” he said. “Here we only have four courts, so being able to play on eight is going to be a gamechanger for us to where we can have more kids participating and just have more opportunity for kids to get a few more reps on a daily basis.”

Four of the eight courts feature both 36′ and 60′ markings to support youth programming.

The courts will open on Saturday, Aug. 29th at 9 a.m.
