The US Open is one of my favorite sporting events of the year. Not only is it one of the biggest tennis tournaments in the world, but it’s also one of the biggest fashion events.

Sure, it’s fun to see what celebrities wear to the Super Bowl or an F1 race, but the US Open brings another level of sophisticated sportswear that’s rivaled only by Wimbledon (IMO).

For years, US Open fashion has been under heavy scrutiny (and obsession) — but recently, viewers’ attention has gone elsewhere… influencers. US Open influencer outfits have a reputation for either being too low brow or too over the top. All of which begs the question: How should you dress for the US Open this year?

With the tennis tournament serving off this week, I asked personal stylist Lauren Myrick (@trendstylr) for her US Open style etiquette do’s and dont’s.

Myrick specializes in everyday styling, functional capsule wardrobes, curated lookbooks, and comprehensive seasonal style guides, and has spent the past four years working with clients. She gave me some of her top fashion tips for dressing for the US Open — because this year’s event is bound to serve up more than just wicked tennis swings.

The stylist put together what fashion essentials she would pick for men attending the US Open this year. The outfit includes:

Greyson Sweater Polo

Rag and Bone Chino Shorts

RayBan Wayfarer Glasses

Shinola Runwell Watch

New Balance 550

The fashion mistake people make when attending the US Open

Over- or under-dressing isn’t the issue, according to Myrick — the real issue is leaning too far into fashion over function. When attendees dress to impress on Instagram, they tend to forget about the logistics that go with attending an event on a hot day in NYC.

“There are definitely ways to look stylish without sacrificing comfort. Day sessions are notoriously hot, so light and breathable fabrics like linens and cottons are key,” Myrick said. “I also recommend bringing a light layer on hand for when the temperature drops during night sessions.”

Who does US Open fashion best?

One of my biggest East Coast fashion inspirations is Paige Lorenze — now Paige Paul after her recent wedding to tennis pro Tommy Paul. Her brand Dairy Boy encompasses everything the sport is about and reflects much of the style I’ve seen growing up on Long Island.

Myrick agrees: “She’s the one influencer that nails that sporty, yet sophisticated vibe every time without it ever feeling ‘costumey.’ I’ve yet to see a US Open look from her that I didn’t absolutely love, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what she pulls together this year.”

US Open fashion advice for first-time attendees

For those attending the US Open for the first time, Myrick encourages you to let your accessories make your outfit. “Start with a simple, comfortable base, then elevate it with a pair of fun sunglasses and a statement handbag.”

Plus, while you’re there, she recommends hitting up the Polo Ralph Lauren, Wilson, and US Open Collection stores for exclusive gear.

“I may or may not have gone a little crazy on US Open gear for myself there last year,” Myrick jokes.
