BROCKWAY — Even on a beautiful day across most of the area, the girls tennis teams from Brockway and Elk County Catholic did have to dodge a few raindrops early in their match at Brockway on Tuesday afternoon.
The showers were far from persistent, though, and the two teams were able to complete their match with no issues, with the visiting Lady Crusaders picking up a 5-0 sweep for their first official win of the season after being rained out against DuBois in Monday evening’s opening match.
At No. 1 singles, the match was filled with long rallies from both sides, but it was ECC’s Arianna Gurosik emerging victorious over Brockway’s Maria Buttery by a 6-2, 6-0 score.
In the second singles pairing, ECC’s Jolene Rippey managed to win the first set over Brockway’s Jorden Sanchez 6-1, then followed up with a 6-2 win in the second set to secure her team point.
Lana Elmquist closed out the singles sweep for the Lady Crusaders by besting Brockway’s Rosalina Bickar 6-2 in the first set, then 6-1 in the second.
And in the only contested doubles match, ECC’s top pairing of Ava Corl and Bella Dixon managed a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Brockway’s duo of Lizzie Heverely and Sadie Cherubini.
The fifth team point also went to the Lady Crusaders, as the Lady Rovers did not have enough players on-hand to field a second doubles team.
ECC (1-0) is scheduled to return to action on Thursday when they host Punxsutawney, while Brockway (0-2) is off until Monday, when they welcome St. Marys to town.
