Serena, 44, made her comeback to the sport this summer after four years away, competing in the doubles at Queen’s and getting the singles wildcard at Wimbledon, where she lost to 20-year-old Maya Joint in three sets.

She suffered a knee injury during the Grand Slam, though, which proved a setback in her return.

“That was a little traumatic experience for me,” she said earlier this month. “Took me like two hours to leave the locker room that night.

“And it’s been a long recovery, which is something I never thought I’d say because I never thought I’d be here sitting talking to you all again. But you know, what doesn’t kill you make you stronger, and so it’s good.”

Venus, 46, has continued to play both singles and doubles on the WTA Tour, most recently losing to Emiliana Arango at the Cincinnati Open.

The sisters also played together in Cincinnati, beaten in three sets by Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns.

Serena starred alongside Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open mixed doubles this week, reaching the quarter-finals, while Venus has also been handed a wildcard for the singles draw.

The greats have won 14 major doubles titles together, most recently winning as a duo at Wimbledon in 2016.

They have never lost a major doubles final together, but they will not be amongst the favourites a decade on from their last success.

Serena and Venus will begin their doubles campaign on September 3 or September 4.

The former demonstrated her lasting quality alongside Alcaraz in the mixed doubles, entertaining the crowd despite a quarter-final loss to Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli.

“It’s always amazing to be here. I never expected to be back on this court,” she said.

“It was just a really cool moment. I never thought this would happen.”

Alcaraz, who had made his long-awaited return to action after missing several months with a wrist injury, said: “I think everyone could see I was really nervous, I double-faulted on the first point.

“I was out for almost five months and I almost forgot how it feels stepping out on the court once again.

“It [took] just a couple of games [to settle] and she made it very easy for me to enjoy it and try to go for it.”
