Emma Raducanu could make her comeback at the end of this month, as the Brit has appeared on the entry list for the China Open, a WTA 1000 event in Beijing. The world No. 70 has not played a match since June, when she reached the final at London’s Queen’s Club.
Raducanu, 23, pulled out of Wimbledon on the eve of the tournament with a stress fracture in her leg. And the same issue forced her out of the US Open on the five-year anniversary of her historic title run here.
But the British No. 2 now seems to be eyeing a comeback during the Asian swing, as she has signed up for the China Open, which takes place from September 30 to October 7. Raducanu also entered the tournament last year, blowing match points during a third-round defeat to Jessica Pegula.
The tournament unveiled its entry list on Wednesday, with three Brits set to take part. Raducanu isn’t the only one making a comeback, as Brighton-based star Sonay Kartal has entered using her special ranking of No. 56.
Kartal has not played a match since March due to a back injury. After reaching a career-high of No. 44 last summer, she has slipped to No. 124, but is able to use her special injury-protected ranking, as she will have spent more than six months on the sidelines by the time she returns in Beijing.
British No. 1 Katie Boulter is also on the list. The entire WTA top 10 has entered the tournament, but Victoria Mboko looks set to continue her injury absence after slipping on the court at Queen’s earlier this summer and injuring her MCL. Alex Eala has not signed up and is expected to represent the Philippines in the Asian Games instead.
For Raducanu, it’s a promising sign that she has no plans to cut her 2026 season short and return next year. The former world No. 10 has endured a frustrating year. She ended her 2025 season early due to a foot injury, which also hampered her pre-season preparations.
In January, she parted ways with Spanish coach Francisco Roig. Shortly after reaching her first final in almost five years at the Transylvania Open in February, Raducanu was struck down by a viral illness which forced her to the sidelines for two months.
She reunited with old coach Andrew Richardson, who was in her corner when she won the 2021 US Open, and made progress when she finished runner-up at Queen’s. But Raducanu had to play three matches in two days during her run to the final, and hurt her leg. This later developed into a stress fracture.
Should Raducanu make her comeback in Beijing, it will have been three-and-a-half months since her last match, a 6-0 7-6 loss to Vekic in that final.
