We have a blockbuster Day 9 in store at the US Open, as eight women will battle for the last quarterfinal spots. As always, our writers share their thoughts on all of the matches for you. Predicting these matches are Amanda Bergman, Andreas Pelekis, Ateet Shivastavra, Zain Mustafa, and Tope Oke. Who do you think will reach the quarters?
US Open Day 9 Women’s Predictions
Elena Rybakina vs Naomi Osaka
Amanda:
The first meeting between Osaka and Rybakina was a few weeks ago in Toronto, with Rybakina winning in three close sets. Despite questions surrounding Rybakina heading into the US Open, she hasn’t dropped a set yet while Osaka has had to come through a few three-setters. Rybakina has been much more consistent than Osaka this week, and that should ultimately see her through.
Prediction: Rybakina in 3
Andreas:
A surprising choice to not be played out on Arthur Ashe Stadium, because both are playing some of their best tennis. As Rybakina etches closer to the World No. 1 spot, pressure has to play a factor. Meanwhile, Osaka is playing with nothing to lose, hitting with aggression and clarity. Rybakina beat Osaka in their only meeting earlier this summer in Toronto, with the match essentially coming down to the serve and big mental points. Rybakina has the slightly better serve on a good day, and that weapon could be the difference on Monday. This match, however, feels like a toss up.

Ateet:
These two recently met in Toronto, where Elena Rybakina won a close encounter, and since then she has picked up her form while Naomi Osaka’s level has dipped. Osaka will be looking for revenge, but I am not convinced by what she has shown so far, and to beat the #2 seed, she will need her peak level.
Prediction: Rybakina in 3
Zain:
Naomi Osaka takes on Elena Rybakina in a matchup of big serves and power baseline play. Both these players rely on similar things, namely a big first serve, powerful forehands, and consistency on the backhand. Rybakina has the more solid backhand, while Osaka’s forehand is arguably the most important shot in this matchup.
While these two players rely heavily on their first serve, the matchup arguably comes down to how each player returns and manages their unforced error count. The Kazakh entered this tournament struggling physically and knowing that a run to the semifinals would make her world No. 1, regardless of what else happens. That pressure and physical cloud, along with Osaka’s game, which is tailor-made for these courts in New York, makes me tend to go for the upset here in what should be a thrilling contest.

Tope:
Osaka has shown grit to battle through two three-setters already, but Rybakina’s serve and her recent comeback win over Osaka in Toronto make her the narrow favourite in a match likely to hinge on a handful of points. Expect big hitting, minimal breaks, and another three-set thriller between these two with the Japanese star billed to cause an upset

Mirra Andreeva vs Anastasia Potapova
Amanda:
Andreeva and Potapova played each other at the US Open last year, with Andreeva winning in straight sets in the second round. Both players are playing better tennis now, but Andreeva has the head-to-head advantage and her level is extremely high as she’s making her best US Open run to date.
Prediction: Andreeva in 2
Andreas:
Andreeva has largely been untested at the US Open, but Potapova and her firepower will present some big challenges. However, Andreeva’s last loss to the Austrian took place in 2022, and her variety and foot speed will force Potapova into errors. Potapova can win if she can target Andreeva’s slightly weaker serve, but expect the No. 5 seed to control the rallies.

Ateet:
Anastasia Potapova upset Amanda Anisimova in straight sets in the third round and is in the fourth round for the first time at the US Open. This has been a surprising run from Potapova given her recent form. Mirra Andreeva has won the last three encounters between them and is the heavy favourite to win again.
Prediction: Andreeva in 2
Zain:
Anastasia Potapova had arguably her best performance of the year in her previous match, as she now takes on Mirra Andreeva in what is expected to be another match determined from the back of the court.
Andreeva will be the counterpuncher in this match, looking to absorb the pace from Potapova and redirect it to great effect. Historically, Andreeva has done that very well, which is why she has also had much of the success in this matchup. If Potapova catches fire, her aggressive game can trouble anyone. But it is likely that Andreeva has all the answers for her and, as a result, reaches the quarterfinals.

Tope:
Andreeva has been near-untouchable in New York and holds a commanding 3-1 head-to-head edge over Potapova, including last year’s win at this very tournament. But Potapova just dismantled Anisimova so don’t expect a straightforward night for the Russian fifth seed. Infact, sound the upset alarm

Iga Swiatek vs Qinwen Zheng
Amanda:
The most high-profile match between these two was Zheng beating Swiatek in the Olympic semifinals in 2024, but other than that this matchup has been one-way traffic for Swiatek, who has beaten Zheng seven times. Swiatek didn’t play her best in the third round but still managed a straight-set win, while Zheng needed a monumental third-set comeback. This has been a great run for Zheng and she can certainly challenge Swiatek, but the head-to-head is hard to ignore.
Prediction: Swiatek in 3
Andreas:
After coming back from 5-0 down in the third set against Madison Keys, Zheng has nothing to lose here. Unfortunately for the Olympic Gold Medalist, she’s struggled in this head-to-head, and Swiatek has played well here, playing under the radar. Look for the Pole to reach another US Open quarterfinal.

Ateet:
Iga Swiatek faced her toughest test in the third round against Marie Bouzkova, who played a great match and was a point away from winning the second set. Swiatek wasn’t at her best, but she played two strong tiebreaks. Qinwen Zheng has made a great effort to advance this far as a qualifier, but the match against Madison Keys must have worn her out, and I’m not sure how much more she has left in the tank.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
Zain:
Qinwen Zheng has done incredibly well to make it this far in this tournament after having to come through the qualifying rounds, with the highlight of her run being her third-round win, in which she came back from a 5-0 deficit in the third set. Now she faces Iga Swiatek in a match that has historically been one of her toughest matchups.
While Zheng’s run so far has been inspirational for a player who is looking to claw back to the point where she once was before injury, it is likely that Swiatek proves to be just too formidable for the Chinese player from the baseline, winning the match in straight sets.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
Tope:
Swiatek escaped a real scare against Bouzkova but has looked human in a way she rarely does at Slams and Zheng, fresh off one of the great comebacks in recent memory, will sense an opening. Still, a 7-1 head-to-head and a perfect 5-0 record on outdoor hard makes Swiatek the clear favourite to reach the last eight.

Coco Gauff vs Iva Jovic
Amanda:
Gauff beat Jovic earlier this year in three sets on clay, and that’s been the only meeting of their career. Jovic is much more solid on hard courts and has played some great tennis to get to the fourth round, but Gauff may be too tall a task for her. Gauff hasn’t dropped a set yet and she’s on a nine-match winning streak, playing her best tennis. She can outmatch Jovic’s athleticism and while this may be Gauff’s toughest challenge yet, it’s one she can overcome.
Prediction: Gauff in 3
Andreas:
Gauff has been steady on these New York courts, but the fourth round has been a challenging stage for the American; she lost in this round in the last two years. Her forehand has improved, though Jovic’s groundstrokes have been at a top level. The 18-year-old won one of the best matches of the tournament in a thriller over Alexandra Eala, and with her confidence at a high, she’ll have less to lose on Monday. Gauff is certainly less of a risk-taker, but Jovic has the weapons to open up the draw.

Ateet:
Iva Jovic defeated Alexandra Eala in what was the best match of the tournament so far and is into the second week of a Slam for the third time in her career. Jovic has already faced Coco Gauff before, and that should give her some confidence heading into this match. Both are great athletes from the baseline, but Jovic doesn’t get many free points on serve, and Gauff should be able to put her under immense pressure throughout the match.
Prediction: Gauff in 3
Zain:
Iva Jovic showed great mental fortitude and resilience to come through her third-round match, which many thought was one of the matches of the year. Now she faces Coco Gauff in an all-American showdown in New York.
Jovic at her best, behind her fluid forehand and solid baseline game, can challenge Gauff, but Gauff’s playstyle is built on suffocating her opponents on the baseline and making matches physical. Against a player who is likely to be fatigued and had to take a medical timeout in her previous match, I expect Gauff’s relentless style to overwhelm her younger countrywoman en route to a victory.
Prediction: Gauff in 2
Tope:
Gauff’s experience and battle-tested return game should give her the edge over the rising American teenager, but Jovic’s fearless ball-striking makes her a live underdog on the right day. Expect flashes of brilliance from Jovic, but Gauff’s composure to close it out.
