Defending champion Iga Swiatek is expecting one of her toughest tests yet at Wimbledon after setting up a third-round clash against rising Filipina star Alexandra Eala, a player she believes becomes even more dangerous on grass.<\/p>\n

The two players have faced each other twice on the WTA Tour, with the head-to-head locked at 1-1. Eala stunned Swiatek in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Miami Open before the Polish star avenged the defeat with a three-set victory in the second round of the Madrid Open later that season.<\/p>\n

Although Swiatek has already experienced Eala’s game on hard courts and clay, the reigning champion admitted that grass presents a completely different challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t particularly know her game on grass. Obviously you can watch a little bit. But I know how she plays because we\u2019ve played already. She has a tricky game. I can assume on grass that it\u2019s even more tricky because of the surface,\u201d Swiatek said after advancing to the third round.<\/p>\n

The five-time Grand Slam champion believes Eala’s ability to mix up the pace and disrupt rhythm makes her especially dangerous on the lawns of Wimbledon.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor sure she\u2019s using her strengths, the change of rhythm and everything. So I will prepare and I\u2019ll be ready. It will be a good challenge for me because she doesn\u2019t give that rhythm. I\u2019ll need to be ready for different kinds of shots,\u201d Swiatek added.<\/p>\n

HOW SWIATEK, EALA ADVANCED TO ROUND 3<\/p>\n

Swiatek booked her place in the third round with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 win over former world No.1 Karolina Pliskova<\/a> on Centre Court. After surviving a stern three-set test against Taylor Townsend in the opening round, the defending champion looked far more settled, dominating with heavy topspin, precise returning and relentless consistency.<\/p>\n

The victory also marked her 26th consecutive appearance in the third round of a Grand Slam, a feat achieved by only Martina Navratilova and Conchita Martinez in the Open Era.<\/p>\n

Eala, meanwhile, continued her impressive rise by fighting back from a set down to beat Australia’s Maya Joint 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Seeded 29th, the 21-year-old showcased her composure and shot-making variety to reach the last 32 at the All England Club, setting up another intriguing meeting with Swiatek.<\/p>\n

With their rivalry evenly poised at one win apiece and Eala enjoying the best Grand Slam run of her career, Saturday’s contest promises to be one of the standout matches of the women’s draw as Swiatek looks to keep her title defence on track against one of the tour’s fastest-rising stars.<\/p>\n
