While there isn\u2019t an official ranking of tennis players per capita by town in the United States because the USTA tracks participation nationally and by broad regions (via its USTA Sections) rather than by individual municipalities. However, based on the concentration of courts, clubs, leagues, academies, and the local culture of tennis, a few places clearly stand out as America\u2019s biggest tennis hotbeds on a per-capita basis. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Some of the strongest candidates are:<\/p>\n

  1. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina \u2013 Probably the best argument for No. 1. With only around 40,000 year-round residents, it has dozens of courts, numerous resorts, and one of the nation\u2019s highest concentrations of active recreational players.<\/li>\n
  2. Vero Beach, Florida \u2013 Far more tennis-centric than its population would suggest. Between clubs like Sea Oaks, Timber Ridge, The Boulevard, and numerous leagues and retirees who play several times per week, Vero Beach is arguably among the top five tennis communities per capita in America.   4. Indian Wells and nearby Palm Desert, California \u2013 The Coachella Valley has one of the highest concentrations of tennis facilities and avid recreational players anywhere in the country.<\/li>\n
  5. Boca Raton, Florida \u2013 Long considered one of the nation\u2019s tennis capitals, with numerous private clubs, academies, and USTA league participants.<\/li>\n
  6. Sarasota and Bradenton, Florida \u2013 The influence of academies, including IMG Academy, creates an unusually high concentration of serious players.<\/li>\n
  7. Sea Island and nearby St. Simons Island, Georgia \u2013 Resort tennis and retirement communities produce an exceptionally high participation rate.<\/li>\n
  8. Kiawah Island, South Carolina \u2013 Another small community with a remarkably high percentage of residents and visitors who play regularly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If you\u2019re talking about larger metropolitan areas, then Atlanta is widely regarded as the biggest tennis city in America by participation and league activity, though not necessarily per capita. \u00a0<\/p>\n

    An educated guess for the top five true per-capita tennis towns would be:<\/p>\n

    2. Vero Beach, FL<\/li>\n
    3. Indian Wells\/Palm Desert, CA<\/li>\n
    4. Naples, FL<\/li>\n

      And if you restricted it to towns with at least 25,000 residents, Vero Beach would have a very strong case<\/a> to be among the top three tennis-playing communities in the United States. Vero Beach is the home of the annual Mardy Fish Children\u2019s Foundation <\/a>Tennis Championships, the USTA Pro Circuit event named for the foundation created by the Vero Beach native son Mardy Fish, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist and Davis Cup hero. Vero Beach is also the home of three-time U.S. Open champion Ivan Lendl and 1986 French Open runner-up Mikael Pernfors.<\/p>\n
