Jessica Pegula and Alexandra Eala set for Monday return

The DC Open women’s final between Jessica Pegula and Alexandra Eala has been suspended due to persistent rain in Washington, D.C., with the championship match set to resume on Monday, August 3. Pegula currently leads 6-4, 1-2 after a weather-interrupted battle that could decide a major milestone for both players.

The final was originally scheduled to begin at noon local time, but thunderstorms in the area delayed the start by several hours. The players eventually stepped onto court around 3 p.m., but precipitation returned midway through the second set, forcing another interruption at 3:57 p.m. and preventing a restart on Sunday.

The suspension creates a difficult situation for the players involved, as the Canadian Open began its main draw in both the ATP and WTA events on Sunday, with the opening day also heavily affected by rain delays and multiple suspensions. The men’s final between Taylor Fritz and Rafael Jodar was also postponed due to the weather, leaving both championship matches unfinished heading into Monday.

When will finals resume?

Although Pegula, Eala, Fritz and Jodar are all seeded players and will not have to compete in the opening rounds in Toronto, they are still expected to be in Canada ahead of their tournament commitments. With both finals scheduled to resume on Monday, the four players will likely face a quick turnaround and will need to travel immediately after their matches conclude. Currently, the women’s final will resume at 12:00 pm (4:00 pm BST, 17:00 CET) with the men’s final set for an hour later at 1:00 pm. Cloudy and very humid conditions with showers and a heavy thunderstorm are set for Monday, albeit with no rain between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm, so the chaos might end.

Pegula holds advantage, but Eala’s breakthrough chance remains alive

Pegula made the stronger start on Centre Court, overcoming Eala’s early challenge to claim the opening set 6-4. The American world No. 3 was able to apply pressure on return and take control of the match, but Eala showed signs of momentum early in the second set before the rain interruption halted the contest.

The 20-year-old Filipino is attempting to win the biggest title of her career after reaching her first WTA final in Washington. Her breakthrough week included several impressive victories and further strengthened her reputation as one of the most promising young players on the tour.

Pegula, meanwhile, is seeking her second DC Open title and the 12th singles trophy of her career. The American continues her strong 2026 season and entered the final as the higher-ranked player, but Eala has already demonstrated throughout the tournament that she can challenge established names.

The final will now continue on Monday, with Pegula looking to close out the second set and Eala trying to force a deciding set. Beyond the title itself, both players will be managing the unusual challenge of completing a final and immediately transitioning into another tournament week.

Matches have been cancelled for tonight.

The women’s singles final will now take place at 12:00pm tomorrow.

The men’s singles final will take place not before 1:00pm tomorrow.
