Transgender women are to be banned from all competitive women\u2019s tennis<\/a> matches in Britain.<\/p>\n Thanks for registering! You can update your email subscriptions at any time in the The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announced<\/a> the change on Thursday (7 August), citing the Equality and Human Rights Commission\u2019s new Code of Practice on the Equality Act, published after last year\u2019s Supreme Court ruling that \u201cwoman\u201d and \u201csex\u201d in the Act refer to biological sex.<\/p>\n The LTA already restricted transgender women and non-binary people assigned male at birth from the women\u2019s category, but only in competitions between players from different clubs or counties.<\/p>\n Under the updated policy, that will now apply to all \u201cstructured competition\u201d, including club championships and any sex-categorised event with a competitive consequence. Social and \u201copen\u201d play remain unrestricted. The policy comes into force on 1 September.<\/p>\n The change applies only to domestic British competitions overseen by the LTA, and does not affect international events held in the UK such as Wimbledon.<\/p>\n The LTA said its original 2024 policy had sought to balance its dual responsibilities \u201cto ensure competition is fair\u201d and to keep the sport \u201cwelcoming and inclusive for everyone\u201d, and that it was now revising its approach to comply with the EHRC<\/a>\u2018s new code.<\/p>\n
