Alex de Minaur<\/a> has moved into the Round of 16 of the Cincinnati Open for the first time since 2019 after a hard-fought win over Arthur Fery. De Minaur is still working his way back to his best form after disappointing defeats in Washington DC and Montreal since returning from his wedding with Katie Boulter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And de Minaur once again struggled to put away his opponent after winning 7-5 7-6 against the in-form Fery. The Aussie No.5 seed held a 5-1 lead in the second set, but struggled to close it out with Fery making a comeback to take it to a tiebreak.<\/p>\n

De Minaur has struggled to close out matches recently and it looked like Fery was going to cause similar trouble after a rain delay. Fery has been in sensational form having made the semi-final of Wimbledon and leaped into the World Top 50.<\/p>\n

Fery reeled off four straight games after both players returned to court. Although the Aussie held on to win and advance to the next round.<\/p>\n

The Aussie has dropped to World No.8 since his defeat at Wimbledon having failed to defend his Washington DC crown. Although de Minaur admitted he is building back to his best with the US Open the next tournament.<\/p>\n

“I’m happy with the way I found a way. It got tough at the end, probably a little bit harder than it should have been,” said de Minaur after the win.<\/p>\n

“I played a very good match until the last rain delay and then I had to dig deep. I had to kind of reset and take it one point at a time. I take confidence out of these types of tough wins and hopefully every day I feel better and play better.”<\/p>\n

Christopher O’Connell advances in Cincinnati<\/p>\n

De Minaur isn’t be the only Aussie to advance to the next round in Cincinnati. Christopher O’Connell has been fortunate to receive two walkovers to help him advance.<\/p>\n

Casper Ruud retired against the Aussie in the Round of 64 after O’Connell took the first set. And then Brazilian star Joao Fonseca announced he would withdraw from their Round of 32 match against O’Connell before they took to court.<\/p>\n

Fonseza and Ruud both might have one eye on the US Open. Regardless, O’Connell will join de Minaur in the Round of 16.<\/p>\n

While Rinky Hijikata fell in straight sets, Adam Walton played some of his best tennis to defeat Ignacio Buse 6-4 6-3 in the Round of 32. He will be hoping to defeat Jaime Faria to go one step closer to join O’Connell and de Minaur.<\/p>\n
