Nick Kyrgios, former Wimbledon finalist, tested positive for cocaine at a tournament earlier this year and has been<\/a> provisionally suspended. The Australian tennis player, 31, provided a sample at the Mallorca Championships in June, and it was confirmed to be positive in July after testing. Per the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), which suspended Kyrgios, \u201cWhile suspended, Kyrgios is not allowed to play in, coach at, or attend any events organised or sanctioned by World Tennis, WTA, ATP, the Grand Slams, or any national association.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Instagram, Kyrgios posted a lengthy message on his stories about the result.\u201cI recently failed a drug test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine,\u201d Kyrigos wrote. \u201cI made a huge mistake and take full responsibility for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to make excuses, but I do want to give some context about where I\u2019ve been,\u201d Kyrgios continued. \u201cThe last couple of years of injuries have taken a huge toll on me, both physically and mentally. My body hasn\u2019t been able to do what my mind expects it to do, and coming to terms with being near the end of my career has been harder than I ever imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n

He emphasized that his mental health struggles don\u2019t \u201cexcuse\u201d his mistakes. \u201cI\u2019ve always said I don\u2019t choose tennis \u2014 tennis chose me. But letting go of something that has been my whole life is one of the hardest things I\u2019ve ever had to face. At times I\u2019ve felt helpless and alone. None of that excuses what I did.\u201d The athlete concluded, \u201cI\u2019m sorry to my fans, my family, my sponsors and everyone close to me. Above all, I\u2019m sorry to the kids who follow me. I know the example this sets and I\u2019m deeply disappointed in myself.\u201d He asked for privacy and said he would be stepping away from social media and \u201cpublic life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyrgios, who has not played much this year, could be banned for up to four years. He has the right to appeal the suspension, but has not done so as of this writing.<\/p>\n

He turned pro in 2013 and reached a career-high ranking of world no. 13 in 2016. His best result at a Grand Slam was the 2022 Wimbledon finals, where he lost in four sets to Novak Djokovic. In 2023, he pleaded guilty<\/a> in Australia to a 2021 assault of his then-girlfriend Chiara Passari.<\/p>\n
