However, he has won four other smaller tournaments in Barcelona, Tokyo, Hamburg, and Lyon since 2023.

As a result, Fils is just the third male Black tennis athlete to ever win a Masters 1000 title in the sport’s history, joining Ben Shelton and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Upon being presented with the Rookwood Cup, Fils took the opportunity to immediately praise Tiafoe, saying that he was one of his tennis inspirations when he was younger and still training in the sport.

“First, I have to start with you, Frances,” said Fils to the crowd in his victory speech at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. “I mean, man, it’s good to be here to play a final against you. You know, when I was young, I was watching you a lot on TV. You are one of the guys that made me turn on the TV, so I’m very happy to see you back at that level and I hope we will have a lot of nice battles.”

Fils then turned his attention to the crowd, taking note of the fact that the crowd had sharply turned against him for the finals, even as it remained significantly more supportive of him in earlier matches against non-American opponents.

“Now I want to thank the crowd. I mean, even if today you were not cheering for me, but that was a hell of a week,” Fils continued. “I want to say thanks to my team, I mean, guys — unbelievable. I have no words. I cannot say anything except thank you. Thank you very much guys… We made a hell of a job and it’s not done yet.”

The Frenchman then turned his attention to his family, lamenting the fact that they were unable to come to Cincinnati for the tournament this year.

“You know, I’ve been traveling with my dad every week,” Fils continued. “He’s not here now. I won the trophy. But I just want to say thanks to him as well. Thanks to all my family, they are back in Europe. Thanks you guys.”

Finally, Fils turned his attention to the city of Cincinnati and the tournament as a whole.

“And of course just to finish, thanks to Cincinnati, thanks to the tournament,” Fils concluded. “It’s been a hell of a week and I will come back next year.”

Fils will now spend the next week preparing for the US Open, where his title win in Cincinnati is likely to earn him lots of renewed attention as a major name to watch for tennis’s fourth and final Grand Slam of the year. The tournament’s first round will kick off in New York City next Sunday.

French national, young rising tennis star Arthur Fils wins the Cincinnati Open men’s singles title MASON, Ohio —…

[2
21056,256,21053,21055,21052,19512,21054,12692,99,6017,113,28,7956,2388,2144,2820
post-56165","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","tag-22-year-old-frenchman","tag-arthur-fils","tag-attention","tag-big-title","tag-cincinnati-open-man","tag-crowd","tag-fil","tag-guy","tag-match","tag-single-title","tag-sport","tag-tennis","tag-thank","tag-tournament","tag-week","tag-year
["GET
