{"id":63706,"date":"2026-09-03T01:08:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T01:08:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/tennis\/63706\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T01:08:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T01:08:14","slug":"canadians-shapovalov-fernandez-advance-to-third-round-at-u-s-open-national-sports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/tennis\/63706\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadians Shapovalov, Fernandez advance to third round at U.S. Open | National Sports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK &#8211; Canadians Leylah Fernandez and Denis Shapovalov moved on to the third round of the U.S. Open with wins Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Fernandez moved on with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Thailand&#8217;s Mananchaya Sawangkaew.<\/p>\n<p>Later, Shapovalov defeated France&#8217;s Luca Van Assche 6-0, 6-4, 7-6 (7).<\/p>\n<p>Fernandez will next face third seed Jessica Pegula of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Shapovalov next faces eighth seed and Canadian Open champion Ben Shelton of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Men&#8217;s third seed F\u00e9lix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal is scheduled to face Russia&#8217;s Karen Khachanov in a second-round match Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The 23-year-old Fernandez from Laval, Que., who entered the Grand Slam ranked No. 33 in the world, won six of her eight break-point chances and took match point with an ace.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Open runner-up in 2021 has a 1-3 record against Pegula, including a hard-court loss earlier this year in the third round of the Miami Open.<\/p>\n<p>Shapovalov was up 5-1 in the third set before letting Van Assche back into the match. Shapovalov won the last three points of the tiebreaker, including match point with a forehand winner.
