NEW YORK – Canadians Leylah Fernandez and Denis Shapovalov moved on to the third round of the U.S. Open with wins Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Fernandez moved on with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew.<\/p>\n
Later, Shapovalov defeated France’s Luca Van Assche 6-0, 6-4, 7-6 (7).<\/p>\n
Fernandez will next face third seed Jessica Pegula of the United States.<\/p>\n
Shapovalov next faces eighth seed and Canadian Open champion Ben Shelton of the United States.<\/p>\n
Men’s third seed F\u00e9lix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal is scheduled to face Russia’s Karen Khachanov in a second-round match Thursday.<\/p>\n
The 23-year-old Fernandez from Laval, Que., who entered the Grand Slam ranked No. 33 in the world, won six of her eight break-point chances and took match point with an ace.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Open runner-up in 2021 has a 1-3 record against Pegula, including a hard-court loss earlier this year in the third round of the Miami Open.<\/p>\n
Shapovalov was up 5-1 in the third set before letting Van Assche back into the match. Shapovalov won the last three points of the tiebreaker, including match point with a forehand winner. The Canadian converted on seven of his nine break-point chances.<\/p>\n
Shelton has a 4-0 record against Shapovalov.<\/p>\n
