Bulgarian tennis star Grigor Dimitrov was eliminated in the first round at the 2026 US Open<\/a> in New York following a defeat to Australia\u2019s Alexei Popyrin.<\/p>\n

While Tuesday\u2019s match may have been disappointing for Dimitrov, the 35-year-old is one of Bulgaria\u2019s top tennis players, and once reached a career high of No 3 in the ATP singles rankings.<\/p>\n

Dimitrov was born in 1991 to Dimitar Dimitrov and Maria Dimitrova. Dimitrov\u2019s father is a tennis coach and his mother is a physical education teacher who formerly played volleyball.<\/p>\n

It was Dimitrov\u2019s father who first introduced the tennis player to the sport and coached him throughout his formative years. Dimitar quickly realised that not only did his son love tennis, but he also had a real talent for the game.<\/p>\n

In a 2014 interview with the Financial Times, the father-son duo recalled Dimitrov spending day after day practising on the court in their hometown of Haskovo, Bulgaria.<\/p>\n
