NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Next up for Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open<\/a> is … not who he thought it was.<\/p>\n

Alcaraz was surprised to learn during an interview on ESPN<\/a> after his victory Sunday that his quarterfinal match would be against either Ben Shelton or Stefanos Tsitsipas.<\/p>\n

The defending champion visited the set after beating Tommy Paul in his fourth-round match. Andy Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open champion, asked Alcaraz about the challenges either player would present.<\/p>\n

A confused Alcaraz asked him to repeat the question.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re either going to play Shelton or Tsitsipas,\u201d Roddick said. \u201cMaybe just a word on both of them and the challenges …\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t get to finish the sentence because Alcaraz leaned over to look at the paper in front of Roddick.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally? Oh my God, I thought I was playing Medvedev-Tiafoe,\u201d Alcaraz said, before both men started laughing.<\/p>\n

Frances Tiafoe beat Daniil Medvedev in their match that was going on during the interview, but now plays Alex Michelsen.<\/p>\n

Many tennis players say they don\u2019t like to look ahead at their draw, though it might be rare for one to not know his next match so deep in a tournament.<\/p>\n

Shelton, the No. 8 seed, beat Tsitsipas in straight sets.<\/p>\n
