Timber Fire: Crews make progress in slowing Monterey County wildfire that forced evacuations

Jonathan AyestasBIG SUR, Calif. —

Crews continue to battle a Monterey County wildfire that has forced evacuations, ripped through tens of thousands of acres and left a firefighter injured.

The Timber Fire began around 8:35 p.m. on Aug. 8, southeast of Loma Vista, according to Cal Fire.

On top of mandatory evacuation orders, some residents to the west of the burn area were told to shelter in place and to be prepared to sustain themselves for at least seven days. Cal Fire said that if you cannot sustain yourself for seven days, leave the area immediately.

Evacuation shelters have been established for people impacted by both the Plaskett and Timber fires. They are the Carmel Mission Inn Conference Room at 3665 Rio Road and the Cambria Veterans Memorial Building at 1000 Main Street.

Cal Fire said weather conditions are likely to be more favorable for firefighters, with cooler temperatures and increased humidity. More than 2,000 personnel are assigned to the fire.

According to InciWeb, night crews worked to mop up along the Highway 1 corridor, extinguishing lingering hotspots in an effort to fully control the fire. The highway is closed from south of Little Sur River at mile marker 56 and just north of the San Luis Obispo County line at mile marker 0.9.

As of 9:17 a.m. Tuesday, the fire has burned at least 25,190 acres, Cal Fire said. That is a slight increase from 24,970 acres reported on Monday.

The rate of acres burned has slowed as crews increase the containment lines around the burn area. As of Tuesday, containment is at 22%.

About 660 structures remain threatened, Cal Fire said. Details were not released on the extent of injuries a firefighter battling the fire suffered. There are no reports of structures damaged or destroyed as of Tuesday.
