The Peoples\u2019 Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party<\/a>) held its fifth regular congress in the capital Ankara on Sept. 6, with no changes expected to its name, charter or party program.<\/p>\n

Party sources earlier told media outlets that the party\u2019s transformation is planned for a future congress, while the Sept. 6 gathering was largely held to fulfill the legal requirement for political parties to convene regular congresses.<\/p>\n

The congress had limited participation, with DEM Party lawmakers<\/a> and representatives from provincial and district organizations in attendance.<\/p>\n

Among those attending were Parliament<\/a> Deputy Speaker Pervin Buldan, \u015eanl\u0131urfa lawmaker Mithat Sancar, a member of the DEM Party\u2019s \u0130mral\u0131 delegation and DEM Party spokesperson Ay\u015feg\u00fcl Do\u011fan. Other political parties were not invited, in line with the congress\u2019s format.<\/p>\n

DEM Party co-chairs Tuncer Bak\u0131rhan and T\u00fclay Hatimo\u011fullar\u0131 were expected to retain their positions, while only limited changes are anticipated in the party\u2019s Central Executive Board and Party Assembly.<\/p>\n

In her address to the congress, Hatimo\u011fullar\u0131 extended greetings to farmers and workers across T\u00fcrkiye, praising those working in the country\u2019s agricultural regions and highlighting workers, the poor and people struggling with housing costs.<\/p>\n

The DEM Party has played a key role in the \u201cterror-free T\u00fcrkiye\u201d initiative, which seeks to facilitate the dissolution of the PKK. The party postponed its congress during the course of the initiative.<\/p>\n

DEM Party\u2019s previous congress was held in 2023, when it changed its name from the Green Left Party and elected Bak\u0131rhan and Hatimo\u011fullar\u0131 as co-chairs.<\/p>\n
