Following yesterday’s announcement of Rayman Legends Retold, some fans might be wondering if we could ever see a remake of Rayman 1. Unfortunately, that seems unlikely to happen.

Ubisoft’s Loic Gounon was recently chatting with GamesRadar about all the reasons why a Rayman 1 remake isn’t in the cards. He said that it’s a “difficult” game to remake, and Ubisoft feels like Rayman Origins “is sort of a reboot of Rayman 1.” Ultimately, such a project would be “near a mission impossible”.

Gounon, the brand producer on brand producer, told GamesRadar:

“I think it’s been tried. I think it’s a game that’s really difficult to remake, and I think, in a way, the answer to remaking Rayman 1 is Rayman Origins, and we went through those arguments internally.”

Rayman Origins is sort of a reboot of Rayman 1. There are some of the characters, some of the places. (Rayman 1 is) super slow and very old school game design, but if you start changing that, the metrics, the sense of speed, it’s another game. It’s Origins.

I would call it near a mission impossible to remake Rayman 1, honestly. That’s why, when we decided to celebrate the 30th anniversary, we felt that keeping Rayman 1 as intact as it was, going for a bit more of a documentary approach, how the franchise was born, was a better angle.”

This might be disappointing to hear, but we’re at least seeing Rayman return in a big way. Right now you can play Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition on Nintendo Switch (and Switch 2), with Rayman Legends Retold and Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition on October 1.

We recently tried Rayman Legends Retold and you can check out our hands-on impressions here, plus gameplay here. We also have the announcement of Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition here.
