The Federal High Court in Enugu has sentenced two internet fraudsters, Arinze Johnpaul Chukwudi and Ajah Damian Uchechukwu, to jail for fraud and impersonating foreign nationals.
Chukwudi and Uchechukwu were prosecuted by the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges bordering on cybercrime and conspiracy to commit impersonation.
They have been on trial since 2024 following their arrest by the EFCC on May 7, 2024.
In 2024, Chukwudi, who is 26 years old, used a Facebook account to impersonate the identity of JIMCHO MUN, a male foreigner and military personnel from South Korea, who works as a nurse in Damascus.
Uchechukwu’s offence dates back to 2017 when he conspired to commit a felony. He also committed impersonation in order to gain $10,452 from one Ngan Nguyen, a citizen of the United States of America.
The duo pleaded guilty to the offences.
The presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Garba Umar, convicted and sentenced Chukwudi to 11 months imprisonment without an option of fine, while Uchechukwu bagged six months imprisonment and was to pay a fine of N500,000.
