With no games on the horizon for Leeds United, naturally, transfer talk is beginning to dominate the headlines around the Whites.

Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe recently came out and revealed how the new financial rules, Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) will affect United in the transfer window, with the three-year PSR thresholds being scrapped.

Our chairman revealed that the SCR rules will benefit us in the long term, particularly after Elland Road is expanded. However, money may be a bit tighter this summer as a result of the new rules.

That is why Leeds will surely be considering selling one particular player, who only joined United last summer.

Leeds United must consider the sale of Lukas Nmecha this summer

Lukas Nmecha, 27, joined the Whites on a free transfer last summer after leaving Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg. It’s claimed the forward earns just under £44,000 per week at Leeds according to Capology (pinch of salt).

The decision to sign two previously injury-prone strikers in Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on free transfers was a decision that certainly raised eyebrows within the fanbase last year. But, it is fair to say that the 49ers’ gamble paid off. The duo ultimately combined to score 20 Premier League goals.

Whilst Nmecha often had to play second fiddle behind Calvert-Lewin, his six goals in just 1092 Premier League minutes were vital in helping Leeds avoid the drop. He bagged late winners against the likes of Everton and Fulham.

But despite this, the German’s future at Elland Road is seemingly undecided. A report from Beren Cross in The Athletic claims that Nmecha’s future is hard to predict. A new contract or the player being sold are both possibilities this summer.

In my opinion, with Nmecha’s contract expiring in 2027, we should be considering offers for the forward. I feel it is unlikely that, come the end of next season, we will all be clamouring for a Nmecha contract extension given his likely lack of game time once again.

More reasons why Leeds United should consider selling Lukas Nmecha this summer

Whilst it has proven to be effective when Nmecha has started up front alongside Calvert-Lewin, the pair were rarely deployed together by Daniel Farke.

More often than not, Nmecha found himself shoved on the left-wing when being subbed on late in the season. The German looks like a fish out of water in that role. It’s fair to say he was completely ineffective when playing there, more often than not.

Furthermore, when we have seen Nmecha start on rare occasions this season as a lone striker, it is evident that his hold-up play is a drastic downgrade on Calvert-Lewin’s. Whilst Nmecha may be more impressive technically, we are a far stronger side when Calvert-Lewin leads the line.

As we signed Nmecha for free, any fee we would get for him would be a profit. This summer would be an ideal time to sell the forward whilst his stock is high. In turn, it could help fund the arrival of a new striker Farke trusts to play alongside Calvert-Lewin. Or perhaps, we go for a more natural left-winger.

We do not want to lose Nmecha for nothing next summer. And, if he is unable to replicate his goalscoring heroics off the bench next season, we will regret not cashing in when we had the chance.

Nmecha’s sale could also mean Leeds can afford to keep hold of others. Ao Tanaka, for example, is another that could leave, if a bid came in for him this summer. To me, it’s a no-brainer that Nmecha should be someone we look to move on before the Japanese midfielder.
