Brighton’s struggle to get the best out of Georginio Rutter means Leeds United must be on alert to developments at the AMEX this summer.

Leeds are still in the market for one more wide attacker before the window shuts, with Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin already through the door. Daniel Farke wants a creator in a winger’s shirt, and one obvious candidate is already known to him intimately.

That, of course, is Georginio Rutter. Brighton paid Elland Road a club-record £40million for him in August 2024, and two seasons on, the deal hasn’t delivered what either side imagined. Now, with the Seagulls’ books about to get tight, the 49ers must be on alert.

After Okafor’s £17.25million switch from AC Milan went through last summer, Farke was open about needing more bodies in the attack.

“There’s always room for more quality. Wingers who can work hard and are good against the ball, disciplined, wingers who are quick and good one vs one, wingers who can play like a 10. This (latter option) would be a good solution for us,” Farke said, per Beren Cross.

Shortlisted names did the rounds – Dilane Bakwa, Facundo Buonanotte (who we eventually signed) – and they fit the right-sided attacking midfielder brief. So does Rutter, though, who clocked 15 assists in the Championship under Farke and led the division for take-ons in his only full season as a Whites player.

Since, the German has hardly bothered hiding his admiration of the Frenchman, either. Speaking on Rutter’s late equaliser at Tottenham back in April – a goal that nudged us further from relegation – Farke pulled no punches:

“We know he’s a fantastic player and an unbelievable human being. We’re happy for Georgi, we’re always happy once he scores goals and is there with good performances. We know how emotional his farewell was, and how much he appreciated and loved to play for us. Sometimes you have to accept that the player has to develop a bit quicker than we were able to do,” the boss said, per the YEP.

Firstly, “fantastic player” and “unbelievable human being” isn’t the language of a manager who’s quietly moved on.

Secondly, that last line – “develop a bit quicker than we were able to do” – is a big tell for me. That’s a manager who’d gladly have him back at Elland Road. Farke knows Rutter was too good for the Championship then. He’s not too good for us now.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Rutter has 11 goals and eight assists in 67 games for the Seagulls. For £40million, that’s not a spectacular return, to say the least.

On top of that, new Squad Cost Ratio rules bite hardest at clubs without huge commercial upside, and Brighton sit squarely in that bracket. Their qualification for the Conference League makes the matter more complex – UEFA’s SCR rules cap squad spend at 70% of revenue, against the Premier League’s more lenient 85%.

That likely means Brighton are sellers somewhere this summer. And, a £40million asset they’re not getting the best out of is exactly the kind of name that could end up on the move.

Worryingly for the Seagulls, Rutter himself hasn’t been shy about his feelings towards West Yorkshire. Speaking to BBC Radio Sussex before his return to Elland Road in May, the forward was clear:

“I think the fans there and me were very connected… I wait for a great welcome because I didn’t leave in a bad picture.”

Reading those quotes, I would very much doubt Rutter turns his nose up at a conversation with Farke this summer. Especially when you see his antics before, during, and after that game.

Personally, I’d want the 49ers checking in on the AMEX situation every couple of weeks between now and deadline day. The fit is too clean and the manager too smitten to completely dismiss him.
