Dance, street theatre and eye-popping installations will light up this south London festival

London is awash with summer festivals, from the starry BST Hyde Park right down to the raw edge of All Points East. But beyond ticketed events, the capital is also home to a flurry of free, one-day festivals that don’t compromise on sun, good music and a thumping good day out.
The Greenwich + Docklands International Festival – aka GDIF – is one such festival, which wows attendees with off-the-cuff theatre shows and eye-popping installations the streets of Greenwich and the Docklands for two weeks at the end of summer.
This year’s GDIF is slated to run from August 21 until September 6 at a string of different venues, with the most dazzling street work taking place after dark.

This year’s theme is “We Move” and will kick off with a choreographed dance in General Gordon Square on Friday, August 21, where “propulsive movement, immersive set design and electronic music collide in an expression of the aspirations and challenges of a generation on the edge of change”.
The festival’s largest spectacle is anticipated to be the Efectos Especiales, to be held in Greenwich Peninsula on Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30. Created by Argentinian filmmaker Alejo Moguillansky and choreographer Luciana Acuña, viewers will be immersed in the special effects of a live action movie, as a desert truck powers its way through stormy weather changes.
Other highlights include Oluwatosin Omotosho’s dance production ‘The Aunties: The House of Masks’ to be held in Beresford Square on Monday, August 31, celebrating the grandiose presence of West African ‘aunties’.
Elsewhere, there will be plenty of family fun at Greenwich Fair on Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23 and a series of dance events at Dancing City in Stratford on Saturday, September 5.
The Greenwich + Docklands International Festival 2026 runs from Friday, August 21 until Sunday, September 6.
