Birmingham City are looking to add Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku to their ranks in the summer windowKwame Poku wearing a ‘No Poku no party’ t-shirt at Wembley
Barry Fry expects Birmingham City target Kwame Poku to wind up in the Championship this summer despite interest from north of the border.
Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers have both been linked with Poku, who is leaving Peterborough United at the end of his contract, and would be able to sign him far cheaper than their EFL counterparts.
Peterborough will be entitled to hefty compensation if Poku joins another English club because he won’t turn 24 until mid-August.
But Celtic and Rangers wouldn’t have to pay as much for Poku due to UEFA’s cross-border compensation scheme.
Peterborough would naturally prefer Poku to remain in England and Blues are among the Championship teams chasing the winger.
Poku impressed in two games against Blues in April, including the Vertu Trophy final at Wembley as Posh retained their title.
Peterborough director of football Fry, formerly Blues’ manager, sees Poku playing in the Championship next season – not in Scotland.
“Celtic and Rangers have been at most of our games this season, but I don’t believe Kwame will go to Scotland. He will more likely sign for a top end Championship club.
“A Championship club tried to force a deal through for Kwame in January, but he was injured at the time and they didn’t offer anything like what we wanted.”
