Marathon is the first major release from Bungie since Sony acquired the studio, and it’ll be a big moment for both parties.
While Helldivers 2 has been a huge success for the Japanese giant, it’s still searching for the live service goldmine, and it’s not going to get a better shot than with the latest and greatest from the creators of Halo and Destiny.
Crucially, the new game – which is set to get its big unveiling later this week – will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC on day one, as Sony always said it’d never make the developer’s games exclusive.
And that’s raised questions about whether the release will require a PSN account to play on other platforms.
But Bungie has been swift at putting a stop to speculation, writing on Discord that its game will “not require” PSN on Xbox or PC.
As this is a cross-platform experience with cross-save support, you will still need a Bungie account, so we’re not sure this changes much for those repulsed by the idea of entering an email address. But it should at least save the release from getting review bombed.
At the end of the day, Sony owns Bungie, so whether you’re using PSN or one of the developer’s own accounts, it’ll still be keeping tabs on your progress.
But it’s perhaps good to know players won’t be kicking up a stink over which account is required – after all, Bungie needs to make a positive impression here, so it could do with as few distractions as possible.
