Leeds United are looking to keep ourselves at arm’s length to the newly promoted sides next season. Surprise package Hull City already have a financial headache to contend with.
Very few, if any, predicted that Hull City would have been coming back into the Premier League for next season. They narrowly avoided relegation last season, and then were hit with a transfer fee restriction in the summer of 2025. That prohibited them from paying fees for any new signings.
However, Sergej Jakirovic masterminded a stunning promotion via the playoffs to take the Tigers into the top flight, joining Daniel Farke’s Leeds.

The reason for Hull’s previous fee restriction was an unpaid £1million loan fee for Aston Villa’s Louie Barry. It perhaps suggests the Tigers might be walking something of a tightrope with their finances.
Now, Hull Daily Mail report that Leeds’ new Premier League rivals are in need of sales before the end of June in order to avoid a sporting sanction.
Specifically, to ensure that the Tigers fall on the right side of PSR thresholds (which conclude at the start of July), they must make around £6million in sales this month.
A host of fringe players are already being suggested for this exit away from the MKM Stadium. However, if the club can’t bridge that seven-figure deficit, they will begin next season with a points deduction. The report, though, does outline that owner Acun Ilicali is relatively relaxed about the situation. Although, they clearly have work to do, and fast.
For Leeds looking on, seeing one of the newly-promoted sides start on minus points would be a huge boost for our survival prospects.
Joe Gelhardt permanent Hull City transfer from Leeds United sure to wait
Any hopes of Leeds securing a quick windfall from Joe Gelhardt now looks almost completely off the table.
It was reported very recently that Leeds are looking to bide their time on Gelhardt anyway. But, you’d have imagined that if Hull had the PSR headroom to proceed, he’d be signing a contract there already.
He’s been an absolute revelation for Hull this season, and surely the Tigers are going to sign him. However, the fact they have to make up a £6million deficit to avoid a points deduction, they won’t be making life more difficult by signing Gelhardt in June.
Expect that transfer to drag on into July and therefore pre-season, where there might be multiple interested parties.
