Fire crews were called to the scene of a fire that erupted out inside a 300-year-old Welsh pub on Thursday morning.
Smoke was captured billowing from the Hare & Hounds pub in Aberthin, Cowbridge, with a number of firefighters called to tackle the blaze.
Thankfully everyone inside the building was evacuated safely, however the incident has caused a great loss for the community. Local councillor Charles Champion described the pub as “the heart of Aberthin.”
The pub reopened in early 2015 when local chef Tom Watts-Jones and his wife, Sarah, took over and renovated the site. Since then, the pub has been awarded a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide and been named among the UK’s best pubs by the Good Food Guide.
A spokesperson for the pub has thanked the emergency services and asked their customers to “please bear with [them]” as they work out what comes next.
The fire service has said they received a call at around 8.30am to reports of a fire at a property on Maendy Road, Aberthin.
A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “SWFRS received a call at approximately 8.33pm to reports of a fire at Hare and Hounds, Maendy Road, Aberthin.
“Crews, appliances, a water bowser, and an aerial hydraulic platform from Bridgend, Llantwit Major, Barry, Pencoed, Kenfig Hill, Cardiff Central, and Ely attended the incident involving a two-storey public house measuring 20X10m, with a fire located between the ground and first floor.
“All persons were evacuated. The fire was extinguished using four breathing apparatus, two 45m jets, one safety jet, two hose reel jets, a thermal imaging camera and one positive pressure pump.”
All emergency services left the scene by around 1.30pm.
