A new parking system is to be introduced for patients and visitors at Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH).

Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras will be placed on visitor and staff car parks at Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge Hospitals on 1 July 2026.

Barriers to the car parks will be removed and visitor car parks will be clearly colour-coded in blue and staff car parks in orange.

A spokesperson said that the investment in modern systems will enhance accessibility and make parking at the hospital easier and safer for staff, patients and visitors.   

The ANPR system will be run as a partnership between Wirral University Teaching Hospital and Parkingeye. ANPR will capture number plates of vehicles as they enter and exit the site to ensure correct tariffs have been paid for their stay.

The spokesperson added that this will bring a benefit as those visiting the hospital sites will no longer need to take or insert tickets at the barriers to enter or exit the site, and they will not need to display tickets in their vehicles which they say will be far easier for people with mobility issues.

The flexibility of the system will also allow the Trust to offer concessions for Blue Badge Holders as long as they scan their Blue Badge at one of the payment kiosks on their way back to their vehicle.

The spokesperson continued to say that visitors will also never have to worry about whether they have paid the correct amount and payment can also be made through cash, debit or credit card and at multiple machines across the site. The Evology app also allows users to pay by downloading the mobile phone app to pay online.

Current parking charge tariffs will remain as they are when the new ANPR system goes live.

Janelle Holmes, Chief Executive at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, said, “We want to keep members of the public informed of this important change to the car parking system ahead of it going live. This is a modern system used by many other hospitals and will improve experience of those accessing and paying for parking on the hospital sites.”

Parking Charge Notices will only be issued to motorists parked inappropriately or those who are in breach of the terms and conditions of the car park, such as non-payment.
