Nine Leeds United players who could be loaned out this summer including Harry Gray

Harry Gray will have learned a lot last season and he could learn an awful lot more next term

Leeds United will ideally be looking to sell the deadwood on the edges of the squad this summer amid the new incoming finance rules.

While the Squad Cost Ratio framework will benefit Leeds in the long run, it leaves them slightly worse off in the short term including this summer. Paraag Marathe has underlined that there will be sales this window as well as arrivals.

Joe Gelhardt, who has a year left on his deal, is likely to move on after helping Hull City to promotion while this is the last chance to yield a fee for injury-beset Max Wober too. Mateo Joseph will not be going anywhere though.

The striker, who left to join Mallorca on loan after refusing to join up with Daniel Farke’s squad for pre-season last summer, might well have been destined to exit, but his cruciate ligament injury means he requires extensive rehabilitation and ends any chance of suitors making an approach.

However, while the main senior squad members of last term will either be retained or sold, a number of returning loanees could be sent out again.

Harry Gray

Gray will have learned a lot from his time at Rotherham United during the second half of last season, where he started all 20 of his appearances and scored three goals under two different managers in a side that got relegated.

The 17-year-old impressed during his spell and, with it too soon for him to be introduced into the regular first-team realm, it is likely he is sent on a season-long loan at a higher-performing club – albeit probably after being taken on Leeds’ pre-season tour.

Largie Ramazani

If there is no room for Ramazani in Farke’s plans again and Valencia fail to agree a deal for the winger, it is possible Leeds will decide to loan him out once more should another suitor not come forward with an offer above book value.

Ramazani still has two years left on his deal and last summer transfer chiefs did not rule out a future for him at Elland Road. Another loan is possible, although Leeds might feel they need to be more cut-throat if a feasible offer arrives.

Isaac Schmidt

Schmidt is of similar vein to Ramazani in that he has two years left on his contract, but if a suitable deal arrives, he could exit. Given he cost just £3m in 2024, spread out over a four-year contract, this is possible, but so is another loan if nothing comes forward.

Schmidt did not fare brilliantly at Werder Bremen, with his loan ending with irregular game time, which ultimately led him to missing out on the Switzerland World Cup squad. One saving grace could be if Farke sticks with the wing-back formation, a system that suits him better.

Jack Harrison

Fiorentina look unlikely to trigger Harrison’s £6m buy-out fee and he is due back at Leeds this summer. There is an internal expectation that he will ask to leave, having done so in January after limited game time.

Farke sees Harrison more as a wing-back in the back three system, which does not suit his game. The ideal scenario would be to offload him permanently, but there is a world where he gets loaned out again, amid his 2028 contract expiry date.

Academy stars

The likes of Sam Chambers, Alfie Cresswell and Rhys Chadwick have all been in and around the first team at times but have never really looked like breaking in. The same applies to Jayden Lienou, who was called up to the Wales senior squad last week.

Leeds will not wish to deplete their under-21s roster too much, but it is feasible these players get loaned out at lower-tier clubs at some stage, if progression is on the right track. Charlie Crew, whose loan deal at Doncaster Rovers was cut short last season, could be another one.
