Leeds United look set to welcome back multiple loan players over the summer. Included in that is Max Wober after a torrid spell in Germany.

The 49ers will have a difficult task when it comes to finding new homes for all of these returning loanees. Few, if any, of them seemingly having a future at Elland Road.

Jack Harrison has recently been linked with a permanent move back to the MLS, which would seemingly suit all parties. Elsewhere, Leeds still have the likes of Largie Ramazani and Mateo Joseph to deal with.

Max Wober makes Leeds United pre-season request

One returning Leeds player has recently made a pre-season request that can only be described as outrageous. Whilst many supporters will forget that Max Wober is still on our books, this is unfortunately still the case.

The Austrian defender was one of many who abandoned the Whites following their relegation in 2023 by leaving on loan, despite only joining the club in January of that year.

Although, Wober was part of our squad that won promotion back to the Premier League. But, he barely got a kick, unable to leapfrog Pascal Struijk or Joe Rodon in the pecking order.

As a result of that, last summer, he left Leeds on loan again to join Werder Bremen. Injuries, though, limited the 28-year-old to just 35 minutes of action in the Bundesliga last season.

When speaking on Sky Sport Austria Podcast Der Audiobeweis, Wober acknowledged that his future in West Yorkshire remains uncertain.

“I’m pretty sure I won’t be the most sought-after player at Leeds United anymore. That much is clear to me. We’ll see how things develop,” Wober said.

However, it’s what the defender said next that will shock supporters.

“And I think after an injury like that, you simply need training sessions with the team, friendlies where you get that feeling in your body again that you’re fit, that everything’s working, and that everything’s holding up.

“So it’s really important for me to participate in pre-season training again. And then we’ll see what happens next, what Leeds’ plan is, what’s happening in the transfer market. Things can change drastically in football. So I’ll just take it as it comes.”

The fact that Wober’s asking to be part of the squad for pre-season to effectively use us as a training camp to get back in shape before leaving again is an outrageous request.

Leeds United should just terminate Max Wober’s contract

Let’s be clear, Leeds as a club owes Wober nothing.

We brought him to the Premier League, and how has that been repaid? With just 28 appearances across three years, including two loan spells away from Elland Road.

Our pre-season should be entirely focused on getting the players who are part of Farke’s plans ready for another tough Premier League campaign. It’s not for getting Wober back to full fitness so he can just leave us again.

The £11million we paid for Wober has aged like milk. And, with just one year remaining on his deal, the 49ers should just terminate it so we don’t have to deal with him anymore.

The fact that Wober’s even asked for pre-season gametime upon his return to Leeds is just so incredibly out of touch.

The 49ers must shoulder some of the blame, however, for not forcing a purchase clause into Wober’s loan deal away from the club last summer. Now, they are stuck with an injury-prone defender nobody seemingly wants.

Again, that is why it would be best to just mutually terminate his contract if possible and forget that the entire Wober saga ever happened.
