Cyprus hails new EU envoy

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed the appointment of Johannes Hahn as the European Union’s special envoy for the Cyprus issue. In a written statement, Christodoulides called the move “a step of substantive importance,” highlighting the EU’s commitment to resuming negotiations within its principles and legal framework.

He credited the decision to coordinated diplomatic efforts and referenced EU Council conclusions from June 2023 and April 2024.

Hahn, a veteran EU official, will report directly to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Christodoulides pledged full cooperation, noting that resolving the Cyprus issue is not only Cyprus’ concern but also a European one.
