Andy Halliday reckons Rangers have landed on their feet by upgrading their manager while also making a profit as they prepare to replace Danny Rohl with Derek McInnes.

Gers are set to receive around £2 million in compensation from Austrian club RB Salzburg for 37-year-old Rohl, who has struggled to win over sections of the support since taking charge last October.

The Ibrox club are only having to pay a six-figure fee to Hearts to replace the German with 54-year-old McInnes, who went within minutes of leading the Jambos to a first league title in 66 years last season.

“If you offered me that Rangers would make a profit and swap their manager from Danny Rohl to Derek McInnes, I don’t think there’s a Rangers fan in world football that wouldn’t have taken it,” former Gers midfielder Halliday told the BBC’s Scottish Football Podcast.

“I think Danny Rohl was going to be under immense pressure at the start of the season and it would have been quite possible that Rangers would have had to pay money to relieve him of his duties very early on into the season, and it’s so happened that they’ve managed to make a profit and get another manager under their belt.

“For me, they’re bringing in a manager, not a coach, not a young, promising coach. They’re bringing in a manager with a proven track record in Scottish football.

“I’ve said it so often, to be the manager of Rangers – or Celtic, for that matter – you have to be a lot more than just a young, promising coach. I think Derek McInnes ticks a lot of boxes for Rangers.

“I think it’s exciting times. We wondered if we could get even half of how crazy last season was and I think before the season has even started, we’re already getting some cracking headlines, it’s got to be said.

“I’ve already got one eye on that first Old Firm game next season with Martin O’Neill in the Celtic dugout and Derek McInnes in the Rangers dugout. It could be fireworks.”

Pundit and former Hibernian and Celtic player Scott Allan believes RB Salzburg’s approach for Rohl has spared Rangers a potential repeat of last season.

“I do feel how Rangers performed in the split and a lot of the tactical decisions that Danny Rohl made in the split, I felt like down the line if he wasn’t to start well when the Premiership season started off, I think he would have been under immense pressure early doors,” said Allan.

“I don’t think Rangers can afford to have that same sort of start to the season that they did last year with Russell Martin.

“Derek McInnes, when you’re taking about Scottish Premiership football, is a safe pair of hands.”
