TRNSMT Main Stage crowd gets off to slow start as Glasgow festival hit by miserable washout

THOUSANDS of poncho-clad TRNSMT revellers didn’t let the chronic rain dampen day one of Scotland’s biggest festival.

The rain never let up and neither did the enthusiasm of the smaller than usual, determined crowd looking forward to an evening filled with music followed by watching Scotland‘s historic game against Morocco which kicks off at 11pm.

TRNSMT bosses secured a late licence in order to turn the festival into Scotland‘s biggest fanzone later tonight with chief executive Geoff Elliss hoping to see a ‘sea of saltires’ when the game kicks off.

Before the big game though, it was all eyes on the two stages.

Fife man Cammy Barnes opened the main stage on a very soggy and dreary afternoon, but his country melodies hit all the right notes and got the crowd dancing in the rain.

The typically Scottish conditions were seemingly perfect for Scots band Beluga Lagoon – a band whose music is influenced by the great outdoors.

Merseyside-based indie rockers The K’s changed up the tempo and mood with tracks from their albums I Wonder If the World Knows and Pretty on the Internet.

Nile Rodgers and Chic were the biggest hit of the late afternoon and stormed onstage just as the rain finally let up and the sun threatened to make an appearance.

The soul legend wowed the crowd with hits such as Le Freak, Everybody Dance, I’m Coming Out and a cover of Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams‘ Lose Yourself to Dance.

Over on the King Tut’s stage South Arcade, New Dad and Luvcat all rocked the afternoon out despite the rain and the crowds didn’t appear to mind the weather either.

Among the drenched revellers were pals Scarlett Carruthers 29, Grace Hutchison, 26, and Rachel Curran, 17, all from Prestwick.

The trio were in great spirits despite the dreary weather soaking them to the skin.

Scarlett said: “The rain isn’t bothering us. We live in Scotland. We can’t wait to see Wolf Alice and of course we will be staying for the football to see Scotland winning, hopefully.”

Grace added: “The weather is not putting us off. We are ready for Scotland to win!”

Also enjoying the wet vibes were David Platt, 28, and Betty Valencia, 29, from Ayrshire.
The pair were taking shelter from the rain in matching ponchos and were loving  very minute.

Betty said: “We are just happy to be here. We don’t care about the rain. It’s not putting us off. We’ve got our waterproofs.”

Pal David added: “We are so looking forward to Scotland playing Morocco and I think they can win, definitely.”

Glasgow mum Michelle Logan, 52, was in high spirits early on, sporting Scotland sunglasses and very soggy Scotland jumper.

She said: “I can’t wait to see Dylan John Thomas and then watching Scotland win. I’m predicting 2-0 to Scotland.”
