Trams were stopped and a road was closed off

Emergency services descended near Piccadilly station after a man climbed onto the roof of a tram. Officers were called out to Aytoun Street, in Manchester city centre, at 7.53am following reports of a man on a bridge.
Multiple Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service units were seen in attendance. Part of London Road was closed off, close to Piccadilly station.
Metrolink trams were stopped on the Ashton line while police worked at the scene. Images from the scene showed a large emergency services presence near Piccadilly Station Approach.

A man could be seen on the roof of a Metrolink tram, with police officers nearby. GMP says the incident came to a safe conclusion by 9.30am.
The man has been detained under the Mental Health Act, GMP says. Normal service has since resumed on the Ashton tram line.

A GMP spokesperson said: “We deployed several units along with other emergency services to London Road in Manchester city centre at about 8am this morning after reports a man was on a bridge. The incident concluded after about 90 minutes when a man was detained under the Mental Health Act.”
