Wrexham have thrown down the gauntlet as they bid to make an impact in the Championship next season.

The side who were second to record-breaking Birmingham City in League One have shown their transfer intent by reportedly making an approach for Fulham captain Tom Cairney.

According to the Telegraph, Wrexham are seeking a free transfer for the 34-year-old midfielder, allowing them to offer him “competitive wages for the second tier”.

Their report adds: “The Welsh club, whose rise from non-league football under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has been documented on Disney+, are planning to bolster Phil Parkinson’s squad after automatic promotion from League One.”

Cairney, a Scotland international, has made 27 appearances for Fulham this season, 23 of them in the Premier League, and would greatly add to the experience already in the Wrexham squad.

They are captained by James McClean, the 36-year-old Republic of Ireland winger who played in the Premier League with West Brom, while their forward line includes former England international Jay Rodriguez, 35, and Steven Fletcher, 38, formerly of Wolves and Sunderland.

Cairney has twice won promotion during his 10 years with Fulham, and the Telegraph adds: “Looking at the Premier League for transfer targets is a sign that Wrexham are thinking big.”

Blues have their own transfer plans as they too seek to make an impact next season and challenge at the top of the table.

They stormed to the League One title with a record 111 points, 19 more than runners-up Wrexham, after losing just three times all season.

Former Blue Che Adams has already been linked with a fairytale return to St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park after an excellent first season in Serie A with Torino.

Other forwards on Blues’ shopping list include Peterborough youngster Kwame Poku, who registered 20 goal contributions in League One from just 27 appearances last season.

It is understood Blues would also like to sign loanees Ben Davies and Kieran Dowell on a permanent basis. Both players have a year remaining on their respective contracts at Rangers.
