The 49ers’ recruitment has been incredibly savvy since taking charge of Leeds United.
Last summer, it was apparent that we needed another striker upon our return to the Premier League.
Naturally, more than just a few eyebrows were raised when a pair of free agents walked through the door. Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, strikers who had patchy goal records and injury troubles in recent seasons, looked set to be Daniel Farke’s first and second choice strikers.
However, 20 Premier League goals later between the pair, and we all had to eat our words. And now, Leeds look as though they will attempt to repeat a similar trick again this summer with their wingers.
Leeds still targeting Julian Brandt on a free transfer
Julian Brandt has been linked with a move to Leeds as of late. This was reaffirmed on Sky Sports News after David Ornstein dropped the blockbuster news that Harry Wilson will also be joining Leeds on a free transfer, subject to a medical.
Both free agents have the ability to play out wide and as a number ten, with the pair also having the potential to drastically improve Farke’s squad.
United now find themselves in a similar position to last summer. The 49ers had to do everything in their power to convince Calvert-Lewin to sign for the West Yorkshire outfit, despite the player having Champions League offers on the table.
Unfortunately for us, this appears to be the case again for Brandt.
A report from the Yorkshire Evening Post claims that at least one Champions League club are keeping tabs on Brandt, with more expected to join the race for his signature.
The 49ers will surely take confidence from the fact that they managed to secure a similar deal with Calvert-Lewin last summer. And they did so again this summer with Wilson.
Ben Jacobs also reported that Wilson was the subject of Champions League interest. So, on paper, there’s no reason why a move for Brandt would be unrealistic after the 49ers have secured the services of both Calvert-Lewin and Wilson without the need for a transfer fee.
Another reason why Harry Wilson and Julian Brandt would be incredible signings
Whilst I’m not too optimistic that we will sign both after already getting Wilson, if we could, that would be amazing.
Even if it’s just Wilson who signs, it is still another major cue from the 49ers.
However, if the dream scenario occurred and Brandt joins Wilson in West Yorkshire, that could completley change our transfer strategy in the summer.
Personally, I thought we needed to sign two attackers this window, and typically, they are the most expensive positions to recruit.
However, with Wilson virtually through the door if Brandt joined him, we would still have the vast majority of our budget to invest elsewhere.
All of a sudden, that could make us serious contenders for the likes of James Trafford, for example. As we could afford to spend the majority of our budget in that area, with our forward line already reinforced.
Saving that hefty chunk of money would allow us to heavily invest in positions that perhaps we didn’t think we could previously.
Perhaps instead of just signing a backup to Pascal Struijk, we could invest in a player who could seriously challenge him for his place in the starting XI. Alternatively, if we sell him this summer, we could potentially secure a major upgrade.
The wiggle room that signing two incredible free agents out wide would give us would be amazing.
That is why the deal for Brandt should now be the 49ers’ immediate priority.
