Airbnb activates ‘anti-party technology’ for Fourth of July weekend in Birmingham

  • 26 June 2026

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Airbnb is activating “anti-party technology” in the Birmingham area for the fifth consecutive year ahead of the Fourth of July weekend to reduce the risk of disruptive parties in neighborhoods.

The company uses machine learning to flag potentially higher-risk bookings of entire homes.

The system analyzes more than 100 different factors.

“These are things like the type of stay, and length of the stay and whether or not it was made last minute,” Javier Hernandez, a senior communications manager for Airbnb, told WBRC. “Ultimately, this technology just helps reinforce the protections that we have in place year-round, including our global party ban.”

If a booking is flagged by the system, the user will be blocked from completing the reservation.

Last Fourth of July, Airbnb said it stopped more than 20,000 people in the United States from booking homes through the technology. Around 90 of those blocked bookings were in Birmingham.

Airbnb offers 24-hour support for both hosts and neighbors through its safety line and neighborhood support line.

The company also reminds parents that booking for minors is prohibited. If traveling with a teenager, an adult must stay with them.

WBRC has reported about shootings at short term rentals in Birmingham before. Two of them were deadly.

The Birmingham City Council has been working on a new ordinance for short-term rentals.
