Drivers have vented their frustration as queues as a result of roadworks – less than a mile from a major roundabout closure. The Greek Street bridge in Stockport is being replaced in a huge and complex £20m project.

On it sits a four-way roundabout which carries traffic over the West Coast mainline next to Stockport station.

It is a key traffic route between the town centre, Shaw Heath and Edgeley, including Stockport County’s Edgeley Park ground.

The roundabout was closed on March 31 and will remain shut for a year as work to dismantle, demolish and replace it is carried out by Network Rail. A number of diversions are in place.

One of the ways around it is to travel down Edgeley Road and then Stockport Road/ Brinksway.

However, locals discovered earlier this month that workers had arrived and dug part of Edgeley Road up.

Three-way temporary traffic lights are currently in place at the junction of Edgeley Road and Cheadle Old Road.

Electricity North West say they are carrying out ‘upgrades on the underground power network’ and that the work was approved by Stockport Council.

They say the work, which began on May 7, will be finished by this Monday (May 19).

However, locals say it is causing long queues, particularly in the morning and evenings, which stretch back up to Edgeley in one direction and past the Cheadle Heath Morrisons roundabout in the other.

A mum, who lives in Edgeley and commutes to South Manchester, said: “It’s madness.

“The traffic is backing right up both ways, and it’s really bad at rush hour. And the road is already really clogged because of what’s going at Greek Street.

“The traffic has actually coped pretty well with the Greek Street closure. But with this on top it’s becoming a bit of a nightmare.

“It’s adding time onto everyone’s journeys, and you can see people sat waiting for the temporary lights to change getting pretty cheesed off.”

Another woman, who lives nearby, said: “It’s yet another source of frustration.

“It feels like we are surrounded by road works at the moment.

“Given the length of the Greek Street closure it was bound to happen eventually, but unless the works are absolutely essential then it does seem an odd choice to start them so soon after such a big upheaval, when people are still adjusting to the diversion route.”

Others have also taken to social media to complain, describing the situation as ‘chaos.’

A spokesperson for Electricity North West said: “Engineers are currently in the final stages of carrying out upgrades on the underground power network.

“As always, the work was approved by the local highway authority, and we expect work to be completed by Monday 19th May.”

A spokesperson for Stockport Council said: “We’re aware of the challenges posed by the Greek Street closure and have worked hard to provide the best options in terms of diversionary routes.

“Utilities companies have a duty to maintain their infrastructure, which can unfortunately lead to further disruption.

“We continue to work closely with these utility companies, who have a legal duty to maintain their services, to ensure that their works are completed as efficiently as possible.”
