BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – 10-year-old Legend Simmons ran a 49.25 in the 300 at a track meet held at Wenonah High School in May, the fastest time by a runner in his age group in the entire country this season.
“What I enjoy most about it is the competition and when I get to run,” Legend said.
Legend has been working with his father, Larry, to develop his talent. Larry has a background in track and works with several athletes in the Birmingham area as a speed coach.
“Once he found out he was great at it, he wanted to work at it even more,” Larry Simmons said. “When you see that from a kid that has that drive and determination, as a father and as a trainer, it’s pretty cool to see.”

Legend turns 11 in February. He said he plans to keep pushing for faster times.
“I’m gonna train with my dad as much as I possibly can,” Legend said. “And when I do that, I’m going to get faster and faster and I can get lower times and shorter times. Then I can get the fastest time in the nation.”
Larry said he believes his son’s potential is limitless.
“I think the sky is the limit for him. I really do,” Larry Simmons said. “His self-determination and his drive is a godsend. It’s amazing.”
Legend, a rising 5th grader at Avondale Elementary, is preparing to compete at Nationals next month. He also had a message for other young athletes.
“Try every sport,” Legend said. “And if you like it, and you’re really good at it, that’s the sport that you need to work on.”
