As the football calendar turns over a new year Leeds United will bid farewell to a couple of older players and several youngsters.
Illan Meslier’s contract expires today, June 30, and he will end his time at Elland Road.
Karl Darlow could yet follow him, albeit both he and fellow goalkeeper Alex Cairns are said to be in discussions with the Whites.
Indeed it has been reported Cairns has verbally agreed a new contract for another two years, although there has been no confirmation yet.
Having established himself as first choice midway through last season Darlow has been linked with a move to Manchester United, while Leeds have been credited with an interest in several ‘keepers including Japan’s Zion Suzuki.
Sam Byram ’s deal also ends today and while the club initially said they were in talks with the defender, he has also suggested playing first team football is his priority at this stage of his career.
So as things stand, with no formal announcement Byram and the three goalkeepers will cease to be Leeds players after today.
That is also true of the academy youngsters leaving the club, Connor Douglas, Devon Brockie, Lewis Pirie and Marley Wilson. Winger Douglas has signed for Halifax Town.
Scholars Alex Baird and Elton Simo are also moving on.
