Illan Meslier could be set for a shock move to Arsenal following his release from Leeds United.
That’s according to BBC Sport who claim the Premier League champions have a ‘strong interest’ in the 26-year-old who yesterday left Elland Road after seven seasons.
The goalkeeper’s contract ended on June 30 and as of today he is a free agent – and one who has spent virtually all of his senior career with Leeds.
Meslier signed from Lorient as a 19-year-old and went on to make 215 appearances for the Whites, including 107 in the top flight.
However, none of those came last season as he was replaced by Lucas Perri and then Karl Darlow as he slipped down Daniel Farke’s pecking order.
Two weeks ago he took to social media to confirm his departure – and his express his gratitude to the club saying: “Leeds will never leave me. This city, this club, this shirt; it’s part of who I am now and always will be.”
Free to choose his next move the Gunners have emerged as an option as a back-up to David Raya, with uncertainty surrounding the future of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
