It brings to an end the life of the 52-year-old shopping centre

The last major retailer at Bristol’s first-ever modern shopping centre has announced it will close permanently next month.
The closure of Superdrug at the Broadwalk Shopping Centre will effectively bring an end to the shopping centre’s 52-year operation, as plans to demolish the site, its multi-storey car park, bingo venue and snooker hall gather pace.
Customers of Superdrug and its pharmacy have been instructed that patient details will be transferred to the Knowle Pharmacy, which is operated by national chain Vivo and is based just a couple of doors down from Superdrug’s frontage on the Wells Road.
A message from the team of staff at the store said Superdrug and its pharmacy will close permanently at the end of Saturday, July 11. “Thank you for your support and loyalty over the years,” they added.
Last month, Bristol Live revealed that the owners of the shopping centre, Redcatch Quarter, said they would start the process of boarding up the entire site ahead of demolition starting later this year.
The owners said they were increasingly concerned at a rising number of break-ins, thefts and anti-social behaviour, so would be beefing up security.
The huge site stretches from the Wells Road all the way to Redcatch Park, and developers initially planned to build more than 850 flats in a large-scale development that would have seen ten-storey blocks of flats next to Redcatch Park.
Local residents clubbed together to raise money to launch a legal challenge against that plan being given permission, and developers compromised with a smaller-scale scheme which would see tower blocks on the Wells Road, but townhouses nearer Redcatch Park.
Work on that development could begin later this year.
